Top drug dealers' rounded up after grand jury session By VICTOR INGE Times-Joumal Writer Selma Police say a domestic dispute apparently led to the Friday night death of a Selma man who was allegedly chased down and stabbed 42 times by his stepdaughter. Earnest Holman, 47, was discovered oh the front porch of a neighbors house about 8:20 p.m. where he fled attempting to escape his f9-year-old stepdaughter, police said.
Selma Police Chief Randy Lewellen said Saturday lawmen were still trying to determine what led Yvette Monica Green to unleash the rage that apparently led to the attack on her stepfather. Lewellen said the dispute allegedly started at the victim's 2313 Carver Ave. home, where Ms. Green found a butchers knife. Ms.
Green was charged with murder and was being held without bond Saturday. Right now the only thing we know is the two of them got into a domestic argument, Lewellen said. There was evidence to show part of the stabbing took place at the residence. It is also believed part of the stabbing took place where the See STABBED, page A9 From its session last week the Dallas County grand jury handed down 100 indictments, including one for capital murder. Deputy District Attorney Ed Greene related Friday the strong connection between illegal drugs and the felonies investigated by the grand jury.
Forty-six indictments almost half of the true bills returned were directly connected to a Selma Police Department-Alabama Beverage Control Board undercover drug, operation, Greene said. The operation ncued the indictment of 37 people on charges of illegal distribution of a controlled substance. Of the remaining 54 indictments, 15 or more were drug cases, Greene said. Of the remaining 39 indictments, it is significant that the majority of them involved either people who were committing the offense to get money for drugs or who were on drugs. Debra Cheese, 22, of Orrvillc was indicted on a charge of capital murder in the robbery and hammer assault death of an elderly Selma woman.
The victim, Mary Chamcs, 83, died several weeks following the assault. Jere L. Beck is still awaiting a verdict in his malpractice lawsuit Beck is being sued by the family of Angie Cureton, one of Becks former patients, who suffered brain damage while delivering a child in 1986. This weeks proceedings ended in a third mistrial. Of the two previous trials, the first resulted in a hung jury, and the second was declared a mistrial after an outburst by Becks daughter in the courtroom. The jury retired at 1:15 p.m.
Friday afternoon, and returned with a verdict at 2:45 p.m. The jury foreman said, We, the jury, find for the defendant. Circuit Judge Jack Meigs had instructed the jury that the verdict must be unanimous, but a poll of jurors revealed it had not been unanimous. The jury was sent back for more deliberations, and at 7:30 p.m., the jurors told Meigs they were unable to reach a verdict. One source said the jury was hopelessly deadlocked at 9-3 in favor of Beck.
Mrs. Cureton received $645,000 in damages from Vaughan Regional Medical Center last yea and her husband, Steven, received a settlement of $50,000. Selma attorney Harry W. Gamble who along with Richard Garrett represents Beck, said he does not know if the case will be tried again. It depends on what the plaintiffs said.
