The John Deere self propelled Lawn Mower JS46 comes with a 190 cc Briggs and Stratton engine, the work horse of the small engine industry. The engine is equipped with zone start recoil rope starting system which is one of the many John Deere Self Propelled Lawn Mower JS46 - Lawn Mowers (1)safety features on this self propelled lawn mower. The carburetor is designed to start without the need for priming or choking. A fresh start fuel cap can be filled with fuel stabilizer to ensure that the gasoline is always fresh for easier starting and smoother running. The engine uses a dependable splash lubrication system to protect all engines parts from wear. The engine meets all CARB emission requirements.

Momentum Drive

The pivoting handle controls how fast the self propelled lawn mower will go based on the angle of the handle. The speed varies from zero to 4.6 miles per hour. If you prefer a constant speed you can also lock in the speed with a a drive lock key, located on the MowMentum drive handle.

The 22 inch steel deck comes with a 3 in one blade allowing the operator to chose between mulching, side discharge or rear bagging.

The John Deere JS46 is downright dangerous. The bag has a design flaw that allows debris to fly up towards the operator. This mower should be recalled immediately.

It’s a good lawn mower so far. I have had mine for about 3 months. Went from a 23 old snapper to this. I wouldn’t recommend it over a snapper, but it seems to be the best lowes has to offer. little grass does come out of the bag, but its only noticeable if you stare at it. That shouldn’t sway anyone away from buying it and can be fixed easily for a few bucks. It has an oil filter which should extend the life of the engine. Deere makes better quality mowers available at dealers, but you will spend over 500 on a good one! It cuts well, strong engine, and Mulches too, but don’t set the blade too low.

Just bought one yesterday and took right back today. Faulty bag sealing, blade knocking and kept clogging in bagger chute. Grass was not wet or tall either. For money spent expect more. Do not recommend.

Tractor is a machine that is used to perform heavy work. Work of tractor can do depends on different sizes, number of attachments, and capacity. Tractors are always used for agriculture purposes, as they perform each and every activity in a field from plowing to cutting. In a way, a tractor is an engine of the truck trailer vehicle.

This is the most torque you can get in a 22 mower.has plenty of power to get job done.who bags today ? I live in florida the grass is so thick and corse that i have to sharpen blade every other cut. This machine doesnt skip a beat mulching .I forgot to mention that we mow early morn or eve when grass is damp still not a problem.i have owned alot of mowers that i had to return that couldnt handle the job .most recently returned famous orange brand with bbc and honda engine .what a joke it was the worst.this is a keeeper

A small percentage of these came with faulty bags…. issue was corrected with bag exchange. I have a 2010 model and it works just fine. Cuts well, it is easy to use and I like it. Bagging is not its best quality but certainly not the worst I have seen. Mulches great. It is really easy to start this engine! No need for bbc as you just turn the key and it is running. I think it is a great set of features at a reasonable price. I certainly recommend it.

I’m about to return my 3rd JS46. The first one wouldn’t start with the battery. The second was leaking oil from the bottom (no didn’t hit anything) this third one stopped starting with the battery and now runs for 15 minutes starts sputtering and turns off. I really do mot recommend this P.O.S. mower worst money ever spent.

Well… against my better judgement I bought another one after the first was stolen. Used electric start once and lawn mower twice. I cant figure out the problem with the electric start. So, I guess i have to load it up and take it back to Lowes. I took the first one back THREE TIMES.

Jackson is correct the rear bag of the SJ46 is very dangerous and shoots debris in once face and chest.
I called JD and even the supervisor tells me I have to go to the dealer with it 30 plus miles each way (and I figure probably twice) and I have no one to load this mower in my vehicle being an elderly woman. It only takes for JD to mail me a redesigned bag and get the dysfunctional one back. Nope, they want me to go to the dealer spend over 50 bucks worth of gas and a day of from work and loading and unloading my mower from my car…all for their faulty design. Why do they sell these mowers then at the local Lowe’s and the like? No Customer Service considerations here by successful John Deere.I bought this machine June 2011 and in August I had to take it to that faraway dealer for the self propeller mechanism failure..as well. We left early morning as I had my brother visiting to help me and were back in the afternoon. Also the woman supervisor that called me this morning after insisting I go to the dealer and annoyed, that she annoyed me first, was threatening me in every other word, that she was would cut me off….?
Finally as a totally disrespected customer and fed up, I did cut her off!Never again John Deer for me…and I better do not get hurt by this defective bag as I suspect that at this point is very aware of this flaw on those bags… and probably have replacement to just mail them and get the bad one back. All without having their customers to pay for it, in gas, time and additional inconveniences.

JS46 starts and then stalls after five minutes, do
not know the problem. After removing plug, some how
gas got in engine and drained out. Squirted some
WD40 in engine and new plug but same result.

Make sure your carburetor and gas filter are clean and that the carburetor settings are properly set. Sounds like either too much gas or not enough getting into the engine. Don’t forget to properly set the gap on your new spark plug.

Best mower ever! Starts everytime with the key or just one pull on the line. Never short of power and I cut super low cause I’m lazy and want to wait as long as possible. Easy to steer and no pushing, just walk behind and pretend you’re pushing hard for the neighbors. Only issue I ever had in the past 6yrs is the height control lever broke and that is a SOB to change if you’re not a mechanic! Now I gentle lower or raise it just to be safe. Excellent mower if a bit pricey.

Will the battery recharge while the machine is running? sounds like dumb question but I know nothing about the charging system. Also, is the oil filter available thru either Autozone or any of the other auto-fix-it places?
Just bought my JS46 from a pawnshop. Awesome price. Hope it was a good deal.
