Southland crime: Armed robbery in Tinley Park, child abuse in Monee, and more (2024)

Bridgeview

HATE CRIME: A 49-year-old man told police he was battered by at least two people April 5 in the parking lot in the 7300 block of 93rd Street because of opinions about the Middle East he was posting on social media, police said.

Frankfort

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: A 46-year-old Frankfort man resisted arrest May 8 and refused to comply with Will County officers’ commands at the county jail, police said. Michael S. Nearey, 46, 20600 block of Settlers Lane, is charged with three counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and one count of resisting, according to police and Will County court records online. Nearey, released from custody May 10, failed to appear in court Friday, court records show.

Homewood

RETAIL THEFT: Denzel Rosson, 34, 2300 block of Spruce Road, Homewood, was arrested and accused of felony retail theft May 14 at Target, 17605 Halsted St., after taking merchandise collectively selling for $1,869.98, police said.

Lansing

CAR BURGLARIES: Brandon Tremble, 33, Lansing, was arrested May 13 and accused of vehicular trespassing and vehicular tampering after witnesses saw him entering unlocked vehicles, police said.

Monee

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: A 24-year-old University Park woman accused of physically abusing a child outside a Monee elementary school was scheduled to appear at a pre-trial hearing May 30, charged with nine counts of aggravated battery, according to police and Will County court records online. Police received numerous calls shortly after noon May 23 that accused the woman of grabbing a child by the neck, nearly pushing him to the ground and then repeatedly hitting him in the car as she drove away, police said. Monee Fire Protection District paramedics transported the child to Franciscan Health in Olympia Fields for treatment, police said. The woman is charged with five counts of aggravated battery/child younger than 13 and four counts of aggravated battery in a public place, court records show.

Oak Lawn

AGGRAVATED DUI: Rachelle R. Fisher, 26, Chicago, was charged with aggravated drunken driving May 17 after an officer stopped her car at 95th Street and Hilton Drive, police said. Fisher, who nearly drove into another car before the stop, had a blood-alcohol concentration above the legal limit, was driving on a suspended license and was illegally transporting alcohol, police said.

Park Forest

BURGLARY: A toilet, vanity mirror, kitchen cabinet and 10 feet of copper wiring were reported stolen and a dry wall panel was reported ripped out May 1 from a vacant home in the 200 block of Arcadia Street.

STALKING ALLEGED: A 42-year-old Park Forest man who has initiated at least nine unwanted contacts with a female neighbor since January 2022 has been charged with stalking, according to police and court records online. Ivan G. Williams Jr., 100 block of Shabbona Drive, was maced Friday by a relative of the neighbor after he disregarded her demand that he stay away, police said. Responding officers arrested Williams, who was wearing only a bathrobe, after he also disregarded their commands to stay away, police said.

DUI CRASH: Brian K. Stewart, 28, 1900 block of Adams Street, Chicago Heights, is scheduled to appear in Cook County court in Markham June 17, charged with drunken driving, hit and run, driving without insurance and illegally transporting alcohol, police said. Stewart drove away after side-swiping several parked cars on Juniper Street May 2, police said.

BATTERY: An argument between two school cafeteria workers over expired milk at the Michelle Obama School of Technology and the Arts ended with one charged with battery to a police officer and resisting arrest, police said. Keevon M. Taylor, 26, 25700 block of Linden Avenue, Monee, was taken into custody May 3, police said. Taylor and his female co-worker threw cartons of milk at each other and traded punches around 10:20 a.m. before he was subdued by the school liaison officer, police said. Taylor later reported someone had slashed the tires on his car, parked in the school parking lot.

Tinley Park

GUN THREAT: A 22-year-old Chicago woman who knocked over merchandise displays at a gas station/convenience store and then threatened to return with a gun is scheduled to appear in court Friday for a pre-trial hearing on charges of aggravated assault and criminal damage to property, according to police and Will County court records online. The two-count misdemeanor charge against Totianasha T. Johnson stems from a Dec. 25 incident at Speedway, 7201 Harlem Ave., involving the purchase of cigarettes, police said.

ARMED ROBBERY: A male guest at Woodspring Suites, 18636 West Creek Drive, was robbed May 22 at gunpoint by two men as he pulled his car into a parking space, police said. Paramedics treated the victim/complainant for bruising to the side of the head, police said.
