You should receive your refund in as few as 10 days with direct deposit. Otherwise, the IRS issues a paper check in about six to eight weeks. If there are conflicts between the status shown in the H&R Block mobile app and the IRS Where's My Refund tool, you should work off the information on the IRS website.

The Federal Trade Commission is taking action against tax preparation company H&R Block for unfairly deleting consumers' tax data and requiring them to contact customer service when they downgrade to more affordable online products, and deceptively marketing their products as “free” when they were not free for many ...

H&R Block marketed free products to many consumers who didn't qualify and made it difficult to downgrade, according to the complaint. One hurdle to switching products included “data wiping” — or deleting a user's in-progress tax return information — which required them to start again from scratch.

Factors influencing tax refund processing time

E-filing vs. paper filing: Your filing method is an important factor that can impact the amount of time it takes you to receive your refund. Generally speaking, filing your return online will result in a significantly faster refund than filing via mail.

If you select H&R Block's refund anticipation check, you will not have to pay the fee for tax preparation services up front. Instead, H&R Block will deduct those fees from your refund after the IRS issues it. The RAC does not ensure you will get your refund faster.

Taxpayers who'd like the option of making an in-person appointment with a tax preparation professional may also find value in using H&R Block. Like TurboTax, H&R Block charges customers per state tax return. So if you're filing multiple state returns, you might want to look elsewhere.

If a taxpayer refund isn't what is expected, it may be due to changes made by the IRS. These changes could include corrections to the Child Tax Credit or EITC amounts or an offset from all or part of the refund amount to pay past-due tax or debts. The consumer protection agency's complaint alleges that H&R Block makes it unnecessarily time consuming and frustrating for consumers to downgrade to a lower cost tax-preparation option online after initially selecting a higher cost one.

The price hike primarily stems from inflation and the increased complexity of tax returns, says Jennifer Van Elzen, director of member relations and analytics for the NATP. Tax preparers charge for their services in multiple ways, including by the hour or based on the number of tax forms you're required to file.
